With the motivation that came from our interaction with that little girl and her family, my wife began memorizing scripture by the chapter and book: James, Ephesians and assorted Psalms. I began with Matthew 5-7, the Sermon on the Mount. Then I decided that since I was planning to be a pastor I should learn the Pastoral letters: 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. Later on, as a pastor preparing for ordination, I realized that the book of Romans addressed many major areas of doctrine, so I learned Romans. My wife has since learned several more of the letters, and chunks of the gospels and Psalms. I’ve added 1 Peter, Colossians, the first several chapters of Proverbs and a chunk of 1 Corinthians. Please understand, we are not brilliant people. We do not have photographic memories. In fact, I am a bit absent minded. It simply came down to making a decision to learn scripture.
